January 19, 2017 – Boyle Heights, CA: Students from Dolores Mission School came back to school with more than their new year’s resolutions. They came with anticipation for the launch of the school’s new music program, which will serve every child in partnership with Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA). To help celebrate the inauguration of the program, ETM-LA teamed up with Nickelodeon Animation Studio. On hand were Nickelodeon’s DJ J. Boogie and Senior Manager of Community and Content Relations Carson Smith, who surprised the students with a shiny upright piano (which they shared, was last played by artist Gwen Stefani) and state-of-the-art Ncredible headphones (designed by Nick Cannon) for the music room.
Having grown up in East LA, DJ J. Boogie spoke to approximately 130 students from 3rd-8th Grade about his own upbringing learning music and how he carved a path to becoming Nickelodeon’s DJ. To demonstrate his earliest experience with music, J. Boogie played rhythms on two percussion sticks. “I was offered such incredible opportunities through music, and I hope to pass that along.” And in speaking to the young audience about working hard and following their dreams, J. Boogie remarked, “My hope is that one of you will take over my job someday.” The visit culminated with an interactive musical improvisation with J. Boogie and the students.
